Whether you’re installing a new garden bed or trying to attract orioles for the first time, it helps to start with the right information. And here it is! In this book, experts and readers from North America's #1 Bird and Garden Magazine, Birds & Blooms, give their tried-and-true advice.

A Comprehensive Guide to Gardening for Birds, Butterflies, and Bees: A comprehensive guide for feeding birds, attracting hummingbirds, veggie gardening, composting, fall gardening, taking backyard photos, and bird feeder pest control—just to name a few. You can even get clever DIY ideas, homemade suet recipes, bird profiles, plant recommendations, and more.

Attracting birds and butterflies has never been simpler—plus you’ll get the latest tips and advice for supporting the dwindling bee population, which experts say is essential for the future of gardening. Inside this book, you’ll find irresistible plants for birds, butterflies, and bees, creative garden designs for year-round beauty, and our top plant lists to take the guesswork out of gardening.

Birds, butterflies and bees rely on plants, trees and shrubs to survive and thrive. That’s why doing your part for the environment by establishing critter-friendly areas in your own backyard is so crucial.

This book, brought to you by the editors of
Birds & Blooms magazine, can serve as your guide to attracting new visitors to your landscape. Birds & Blooms has helped lead the trend we like to call “gardening with a purpose” for over 20 years. We’ve always recognized the importance of going beyond just the beauty of a garden, and purposefully choosing flowers, trees and shrubs specifically for their environmental benefits. Birds count on healthy trees and plants as natural food sources and nesting sites. Butterflies need nectar-rich blooms for nourishment. Very specific host plants are key to caterpillar survival. And as bee populations decline, flowers that provide nectar and pollen are more essential than ever. Each of these creatures requires natural shelter as well, which trees and shrubs readily provide.

All of the 250+ featured plants are not only gorgeous and colorful, but they offer a lot of environmental benefits, too. We made sure to include amazing photos of every plant we’re recommending, so you’ll be able to see what each plant looks like and immediately know if it’s a good fit for your garden.

We even went a step further and put together some handy symbols to help you achieve the wildlife-friendly backyard of your dreams. Look for the symbols next to each plant profile to discover what the plant will attract. (Some plants are a triple whammy and attract birds, butterflies and bees!) For extra guidance, check the light-requirement symbols. You’ll be able to quickly see if a plant should be grown in shade, part-shade or full sun—vital info you need to know to create a great habitat.
Throughout this book, we’ve highlighted about 70 bird species and 35 butterfly species you might see in your space. Have fun identifying all of the birds, butterflies and bees in your own backyard!

and inexpensive.....a really good guide.

I bought this as a gift for my mom, who often observes a variety of birds and other critters on her lake front property. We had discussed setting up some areas in her yard that would help draw birds, butterflies, and ok, even bees to the area. When I found this book, I knew it would be perfect. There are plenty of great ideas in it. So I put together a gift of this book, a hanging plant/bird feeder shepherds hook, and some hummingbird stuff.

The book is really beautifully done. Full color pictures, well organized, descriptive and really informative. The way it is designed is just absolutely pleasing. It seems to be a great addition to ones personal library, or even as a coffee table book, given how nice it is to look at.

Even if you don’t intend to plant a garden, this is such a beautiful book with amazing photos! I am in awe of the colorful gorgeous pictures! However, I will definitely be using the information to attract more birds, bees and butterflies to my gardens. It one of the great joys of my life to enjoy nature!

This book contains great pictures and lots of varied information for the price. Although the book takes several pages to make a solid point of the need to use native plants for gardening to attract birds, bees and butterflies, it then proceeds to recommend many plants that are not native. One example of their heavy use of cultivars is they list "10 bird friendly coneflowers" but all are solid cultivars with fancy names. Never mentioned are purple coneflower, glade, pale purple or yellow coneflowers all of which are native. Recommended trees and shrubs include boxwood and Arborvitae which many people like myself will surely find native alternatives. But the book does a good job by providing maps for the bird and butterfly species listed and even host plants for the butterflies which I found very helpful as a quick reference. And there are many good tips and specialized sections in the back adding to the quality of the book. I'm sure I will find myself enjoying the wonderful pictures and quantity of information for many days to come.

I bought this as a Christmas present for a friend who wants to transform her backyard into a bee, butterfly, and hummingbird sanctuary of sorts. I’ve been helping her include new plants in her yard for a few years now but have reached the depth of my knowledge. So, I bought this and made her a couple of mosaic butterfly puddlers. She keeps talking with me about what she’s read in the book and about her plans for the summer. Needless to say . . . It was a great purchase.

The photography is beautiful and the content is perfect for instructing how to set up your yard to be bird, butterfly, and bee friendly. Very helpful!

I purchased this book for my daughter who is interested in saving the bees because our gardens are dependent on them. This book has lots of good information, but I am loving it because of the beautiful photographs in it. It is stunning and my daughter has already planted a pollinator garden for the bees which includes milkweed for the butterflies. We have also incorporated bright reds in the garden for the butterflies and the hummingbirds. This is a wonderful book I'm sure you will be happy with.

I absolutely LOVE this book. Great coloured photos. Great descriptions of plants. Clear identification as to whom the plant attracts. Symbols included for light preference. THIS IS THE GARDENING BOOK TO PURCHASE IF YOU ARE INTO WILDLIFE GARDENING! I am working on creating a butterfly garden that is approximately the size of the football field, and I use this book for my main plant purchasing reference. I have read the book cover to cover almost 5 times and I still find it refreshing and enjoyable. I only wish the book would have listed plant hardiness zones for all the plants instead of just a few.
